I know you all have been dying waiting for me to update you on all the funny comments my students come up with. Here are some more from today for your reading pleasure:
Shona whispering to Naomi during a cold sample writing test (no helping allowed): "It's spelled d-e-l-i-s-o-u-s-e......delicious!"
We were looking at a library book that showed the eastern part of the USA:
"Is this where you are from?"
"Yes. Actually I'm from over here" (as I point to the blank part of the page)
"You mean, once you left it disappeared?!" (eyes wide open)
"Miss, how to you spell asks?"
"Ax? uh.....a-x"
(wondering why they would want to know how to spell that word when we are writing about Alice in Wonderland)
A few minutes later he is telling another girl to spell it that way.....oops, i meant A-S-K-S.
A bunch of the girls sitting around me in the library today decided to have this little conversation:
"When is your birthday?" (asking me)
"December 21st"
"How old are you? You go to uni, so you must be twenty-something, but I would say you are more like 18"
"Oh, I thought you would be......13?"
"No, 17"
me: yikes. "nope a little older than that"
"hmmm....I know, 26!"
Hey, can't complain with that!
In other news, we got our first student from Christchurch this week. I didn't realize the earthquake would impact us so much here in Auckland, but I'm finding out more and more how united New Zealand is. We are expected to be receiving more and more in the next few weeks. It's pretty amazing to hear their story and see how welcoming everyone is here. These people have lost it ALL. Houses, friends, family in some cases, their school, neighborhood, pets, community....everything. Now they are starting over in a brand new city. I am so impressed with the kids though. They don't care where people are from or what they have gone through. Everyone is their friend and they include anyone new. It is so great to see. I think adults could learn a lot from these little ones.
